An army is a ground or land force that primarily fights on land. Air force deals with aviation assets and navy fights in the seas. However today in broad meanings most of nations include three in army. 

They fight for the safety of nation and its boundaries. In history, the country which had 1st army in the world is India. This army was of Hindu king Sudas who defeated the alliance of ten kings. Since then lot of countries formed their army to protect them from foreign invasion.

Today all countries, except a few have their own army for protection. China has the largest army in the world. There are several countries with smallest army in the world containing few hundreds.

There is a list of 10 countries having smallest army in the world.

1: Haiti

Haiti's military was initially known as Garde d'Haiti however in 1958, its name was changed to the Forces Armées d'Haïti—FAd'H. Haiti has smallest army in the world. The reason behind this is several military coups and interference in politics.

In 1995 Haiti disbanded its military however in 2017, army was remobilised by president Jovenel Moise. 4.3% of total GDP is spent on military. At present Haiti army holds the record of being smallest army in the world having only 200 armed personnel.

Iceland is the only NATO country which doesn't have any standing army however its land, waters and airspace is protected by Icelandic Coast Guards. Icelandic Coast Guards was founded in 1918 and they act as Military of Iceland. This military has few defence equipments consisting of 3 ships, 4 aircrafts, naval artillery and few air defence radar stations. 

Iceland spends 0.26% of its GDP on military. Its military strength consists of 250 personnel only making it the 2nd smallest army in the world.

The Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force was founded in 1981. The RABDF has several responsibilities like internal security, prevention of drug smuggling. They are responsible for water security too and perform various duties like protection of fishing rights, prevention of marine pollution, search and rescue etc.

The national military of Seychelles consists of different branches like the Infantry Unit, Coast Guard, Air Force and a Presidential Protection Unit. The annual budget for Seychelles People's Defence Force is €9.7 million, 1% of GDP is spent on military. 420 personnel are performing duties in Seychelles force.

The Armed Forces of the Gambia was founded in 1965. It consist of three branches The Gambia National Army, The Gambia Navy and The Republican National Guards. Gambia imports its defence equipments mostly from China, India , Pakistan and South Africa. 



The Gambian Armed Forces motto is ' Serving the nation with pride'. Gambia spends 0.5% of its GDP on its military. Currently 800 army personnel are serving the nation which makes its place 5th in smallest army in the world list.

USA, China, Germany and Russia are its foreign suppliers. The annual budget for military is $11.2 which consists of 0.6% of its GDP. With 1200 armed personnel, Cape Verde is 7th smallest army in the world.

RBDF protects its waters, borders, internal security and helps during the disasters. Queen Elizabeth 2 is the commander- in-chief of RBDF. 1300 personnel are serving in RBDF.

In 9th smallest army in the world, 1500 personnel are serving.

Surinamese Armed Forces was founded in 1975 when Suriname got independence from Netherlands. Suriname military consists of three branches, Suriname Ground Force, Suriname Air Force and Suriname Navy. In recent years, United States has provided training to newly established army and China has been donating military equipments. Suriname invests 0.9% of GDP on its military. Being the 10th smallest army in the world, Suriname has 1840 military personnel


Although GDP plays an important role in the progress of nations however this is the military who protects the borders incase of foreign invasion. Besides the countries who have no force, these are the top ten countries who have smallest army in the world and are in process to increase the numbers and strengthen their army.
